First-Year Student Advising

Congratulations on your acceptance! The Office of Academic Advising is here to help you navigate your academic journey. We want to introduce you to the support and resources available to ensure a successful transition to Westfield State.

Key Steps:

1. Your first class schedule: The Registrar’s Office will build all incoming first-year student schedules based on departmental recommendations. During New Student Orientation, there will be a presentation given about First Year Journey (FYJ) courses. At that time, students will identify several FYJ courses they are interested in taking. The information will be given to the Registrar's Office and the student will be enrolled in one of their selections.

2. Advising Support: Academic Advising will provide advising assistance during New Student Orientation, and will work closely with incoming first-year Exploratory students. Exploratory students will receive an email from advising@westfield.ma.edu about next steps.

3. Add/Drop: The Advising Center and Registrar's Office will provide in-person assistance during the Fall 2024 Add/Drop period from Tuesday, September 3 to Tuesday, September 10, 2024 for students who are looking to make changes to their schedules.

4. Future Planning: New students are assigned a major advisor in the beginning of their first semester. After the first semester schedule, students will register for their own course schedules by meeting with their assigned major advisor(s) to plan for future semesters.
