Elevate Your Mathematical Journey: Active Learning, Personalized Goals, and a Collaborative Community.

Our mathematics graduate courses feature active learning and discovery, both for mathematical content as well as pedagogical ideas and technology. Classes are small and meet the personalized goals of our graduate students. Our program fosters community so that our graduate students have peers they can collaborate with during and beyond the program. We practice how to create tasks and set up classrooms to invite K-12 students to explore mathematics, as well as dive deeper into the mathematical knowledge of teaching. Many classes are held on Zoom which allows for community and collaboration while giving the flexibility of location.

    Program content is built around graduate student needs. Ideas that are developed during class will be applied in a K-12 classroom (if appropriate) and continuously refined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the application requirements?

Prospective students should access the graduate application online at connect.westfield.ma.edu/apply/

The following material must be received for an application to be reviewed:

  • Completed graduate application and $50 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended indicating a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Three professional letters of recommendation. At least one academic recommendation is suggested. 
  • Narrative statement about your professional goals, academic experience, work experience, and other factors such as academic achievements not reflected in transcripts that support your application. 
  • For Initial Licensure students: a copy of official Communication and Literacy, Reading & Writing subtest MTEL scores or approved alternative as outlined by DESE
  • For Professional Licensure applicants only: a copy of
    your Massachusetts teacher’s license
How long will it take me to complete the master’s degree?

This varies, most students take two to three years to complete depending on how many courses are taken a semester.

When are the courses offered and is there flexibility?

Courses are offered in the late afternoon to early evening during fall, spring, and summer sessions. Math courses are offered remote synchronously, and education course modality may vary.

For the initial licensure program will I need to take any time off to complete the practica?

Working teachers can complete practica while maintaining their teaching positions. For students who are not working as teachers day-time availability is needed to complete this requirement.

What if I want to accelerate or slow down for a personal need?

This is possible with the advisement from the math advisor.

Can I take a course without enrolling into the program?

Yes, students can take up to two courses (six credits) non-matriculated prior to matriculating into the program. Financial aid is not available for non-matriculated courses and cost can be found on our tuition and fees page. If you are interested in taking non-matriculated courses please contact the Registrar at registrar@westfield.ma.edu or 413-579-3200 for assistance.

For students interested in taking more than six credits non-matriculated and will not be applying the credits to a degree additional credits may be taken by completing the professional development waiver.

Do you offer graduate assistantships?

Yes, a limited number of graduate assistantships are available each year for graduate students. These opportunities are competitive and are awarded to students with excellent academic records who are enrolled in a graduate degree program.
